There are two main characters in the movie, “Far and Away.” Joseph is a poor man who does not own his land in Ireland. Villagers in the same area hate their land owner so much and Joseph tries to kill him. On the other hand, Shannon, the land owner’s daughter, is very wealthy but wants to get away from her home because of her family, especially her mother. She is too strict and controls everything about Shannon. Joseph and Shannon have a common dream which is to have their own land, but the basic reasons to immigrate to America are different. Joseph wants to start a new life with his own land without harsh land owner, and Shannon has a desire to live free from her family and she wants to live in a modern country, America, because she likes to be modern.
They arrive in America knowing only each other. Shannon is glad to be able to sell spoons which she stole from her mother, but it turns out that Mr. McGuire was going to steal them even though he was being kind to her. Meanwhile, Shannon’s parents decide to go to America with Stephen when their house is burned by taxpayers who hate wealthy land owners. Joseph and Shannon are the first two to immigrant to the States and her family follows her.
It is hard to move to a new place without knowing anybody in there. They need to start from nothing. They have to find a place to live and find a job. In this movie, Joseph is a strong guy and he can earn a lot of money by fighting. However, if he could not fight well, he would have had to find another job without any place to live. For new people, it is easier to live in a community with people from the same country. They have the same kind of tradition and way of thinking, and they can help each other easily. Especially, if people immigrate to a new place where others do not speak in the same language, and they do not know how to speak that language, it would be so difficult to communicate with each other. They definitely need someone to help them out.
Also, people struggle with gaps between their dreams and the reality. Joseph keeps winning the fighting match. However, the power of rich people works in America, too. The boss of fighting place needs Joseph to defeat an Italian guy for a local politician. He and Shannon get kicked out of their house and they also lose their job when he finally loses the match with the Italian guy. They are separated when Shannon gets a gunshot on her shoulder even though they love each other. Joseph goes to Oklahoma for free land, and Shannon also does with her family and Stephan who wants to marry her. They and many others need to race so that they can get a place they like. Finally, Joseph and Shannon get a nice land for themselves.
People can’t just always have fun in a new place. They have many difficulties to adjust themselves to the new place. In my case, I am not an immigrant but an international student, but I needed to face some troubles until now. Adjusting to a language, a new culture, different communication style, and new people are exciting in some parts but also tough and scary. I know what they are like, so now I’m willing to help people from other country in Japan. How do you think you can help people from other place to adjust to a new environment?
There are lots of good ways to help people adjust to new environments. A very good one is to be available to answer questions, help get them settled in, tell them where to buy food, and things along those lines. Depending on how far out of their normal environment they are, explaining currency, or transportation norms and or regulations is a good idea as well.
返信削除Obviously, kindness goes a long way. But even more so, offering your time to teach them how to do everyday tasks will play a big role in their adjustment. And, of course, welcoming them into your home. I can say from when I first moved to China, it is very nice to be taken care of and have someone teach you the basics until you are able to branch out on your own. I loved having my own apartment, but going and conversing with the general public was difficult at times, especially since Chinese is a tonal language.
返信削除I think that's wonderful that you are willing to help someone when they may need it while in Japan. Because you are at home there it doesn't have to take much time or effort to help someone out, while it can make the biggest difference to that person because they're in a foreign place. I think just lending your time and helping a person find what they need or the resources to do so is worth a lot.
返信削除I would not be one to wait by the landing to offer people help. If there was a big reward for doing this (big profit) then I would have my butt down there getting to know people. The biggest way I think that you could help someone would to just have big place for people to rent from you so that they could have a place to stay.
返信削除I think you can just be there for them. Try to explain as much as you can about our country and how we do things. So them around, what is good, what good places there are to shop etc. Basically be their guide if they ever have any questions or anything.
